Kokopu Greenstone Hei Matau Fish Hook Pendant

This is a very special piece. It is carved from Kokopu pounamu by renowned traditional greenstone carver Nathan Jerry.

This very special pendant is a one off carving and will not be available again.

The pendant measures 60mm (2 1/2 inches) long, 45mm (1 3/4 inches) wide and 8mm (3/8 inches) deep. It comes suspended on a waxed plaited adjustable cord which features traditional Maori binding. It is 100% hand made and comes in a presentation box with meaning card.

Nathan Jerry

is trained in traditional maori carving in wood, bone and stone. His has been carving traditional maori designs for more than 20 years. He is of Tainui decent and His Hapu is Ngati Kiriwai. He has the deepest respect for our nations most prized possession - pounamu. He currently lives in Invercargill and works from his own studio.

Kokopu Greenstone

The greenstone earns the name 'Kokopu' due to it's appearance. This greenstone is also known as 'Speckled Trout'. The darker spots on the stone are similar to the patterns found on the 'Kokopu', which is the Maori name for the NZ native 'trout'.

Hei Matau

This magnificent pure sculptural form is abstracted from the shape of a Maori fishhook or matau. It refers to the fabulous fishhook of the demigod Maui with which he fished up the North Island of New Zealand. The Hei matau is a symbol of strength, determination, peace, prosperity and good health. It is also said that the hei matau protects the wearer when travelling especially over water.
