Manaia

Fish Hook / Hei Matau

There have been many forms to depict the hook of Maui. Maori legend tells of how Maui fished up the North Island of New Zealand using his magical hook. Today the matau (hook) is worn for good luck, bringing the wearer peace, prosperity and good health. The matau is also said to provide a safe journey across water.

Bone carvings are a symbol of New Zealand and its people. From ancient times they have been regarded as good luck charms. It is widley believed that they individually represented many different aspects of life. Often warding off misfortune and attracting health and properity to the wearer. Years ago they were hand carved from whale bone and different animal bone, nowadays it is cattle bone. They were handed down through the generations, and are treasured possessions today.

A hand carved stained maori manaia and hei matau / Fish hook bone pendant. The pendant comes on a black waxed adjustable cord.
