Kawakawa Pounamu Greenstone Hei Toki Pendant

A very beautiful one off piece. This hei toki is carved from dark and south westland Kawakawa Pounamu / Greenstone from the Rimu area of the west coast. It has been carved on the west coast of the south island in Invercargill by Master Carver Nathan Jerry .

This very special pendant is a one off and will not be available again.

The toki measures 48mm (1.9 inches) tall, 30mm (1.2 inches) wide and 5mm (0.2 inches) thick.

Nathan Jerry

Nathan is trained in traditional maori carving in wood, bone and stone. His has been carving traditional maori designs for more than 20 years. He is of Tainui decent and His Hapu is Ngati Kiriwai. He has the deepest respect for our nations most prized possession - pounamu. He currently lives in Invercargill and works from his own studio.

Kawakawa

The pendant is carved from a beautifully dark and rich south westland pounamu, this greenstone is called Kawakawa by the Maori, this is because of its resemblance to the dark, deep rich green leaves of the Kawakawa plant ot pepper tree.

The Toki

Known in English as the Adze. The Toki had much meaning to the Maori, it was of course an essential tool for the survival and day to day life of a Maori tribe, it was usually fashioned from stone or greenstone. The Maori also attribute the spiritual meaning of Strengh and Power to the Toki.

It is suspended on a traditional black plaited waxed cord that is fully adjustable for the wearer, the piece comes in a velvet pouch with a meaning card.
