Marsden Flower Jade Greenstone Manaia Hook Pendant

This manaia is a one off piece and will not be available again.

A very beautiful piece of Marsden Flower Jade Pounamu (greenstone) was used to carve this manaia fish hook.

This Manaia was hand carved on the west coast of New Zealand in Hokitika by Glen Surgenor.

Glen Surgenor

This Contemporary Designed pendant was hand carved on the west coast of New Zealand in Hokitika by Master Carver Glen Surgenor. Glen Surgenor has been carving greenstone for over 25 years. Glen uses traditional methods when carving, using traditional sand stone rubbing methods and hand sanding to a matte/satin sheen this piece has a great antique look and nice artefact feel.

Marsden Flower Jade

The piece is carved from Marsden Flower Jade / Greenstone, which is also known as Flower Jade or Marsden stone. This greenstone features orange, yellow and brown markings which combine with the green colours to produce beautiful patterns in the stone. In Maori this variety of greenstone is called Raukaraka, which means the leaves of the karaka tree.

Hei Matau

This magnificent pure sculptural form is abstracted from the shape of a Maori fishhook or matau. It refers to the fabulous fishhook of the demigod Maui with which he fished up the North Island of New Zealand. The Hei matau is a symbol of strength, determination, peace, prosperity and good health. It is also said that the hei matau protects the wearer when travelling especially over water.

Manaia

The Manaia is traditionaly depicted with the head of a bird, the body of a man and tail of a fish, it is said to represent the sky ,earth and sea and the balance between. It is likened to a bird on your sholder protecting your spirit.

The pendant measures 115mm (4.5 inch) long, 65mm (2.55 inches) wide and 5mm (0.2 inches) deep.
