Marsden Flower Jade Large Hei Matau Pendant

This amazing pendant is carved from New Zealand Marsden Flower Jade. It was carved in Invercargill at the bottom of the south island of New Zealand. It was carved by Nathan Jerry.

This very special pendant is a one off and will not be available again.

The pendant is 90mm (3.54 inches) long, 45mm (1.77 inches) wide and 10mm (0.39 inches) thick. The pendant comes suspended on a waxed plaited adjustable cord, it also comes with a velvet pouch and a meaning card.

Nathan Jerry

Nathan is trained in traditional maori carving in wood, bone and stone. His has been carving traditional maori designs for more than 20 years. He is of Tainui decent and His Hapu is Ngati Kiriwai. He has the deepest respect for our nations most prized possession - pounamu. He currently lives in Invercargill and works from his own studio.

Marsden Flower Jade

The piece is carved from Marsden Flower Jade / Greenstone, which is also known as Flower Jade or Marsden stone. This greenstone features orange, yellow and brown markings which combine with the green colours to produce beautiful patterns in the stone. In Maori this variety of greenstone is called Raukaraka, which means the leaves of the karaka tree.

Hei Matau

This magnificent pure sculptural form is abstracted from the shape of a Maori fishhook or matau. It refers to the fabulous fishhook of the demigod Maui with which he fished up the North Island of New Zealand. The Hei matau is a symbol of strength, determination, peace, prosperity and good health. It is also said that the hei matau protects the wearer when travelling especially over water.
