Cascade Snowflake (Hukarere) Greenstone Hei Toki & Koru Pendant

This pendant is carved from Cascade Snowflake (Hukarere) greenstone / Pounamu, which is becoming a popular stone nowadays.

The style of pendant is known as a Toki/Adze shape has proved to be very popular. Half way up the toki a koru has been carved in the toki's body.

This piece is carved in the south island of New Zealand from Douglas Creek Greenstone by Nathan Jerry. Nathan is trained in traditional maori carving in wood, bone and stone. His has been carving traditional maori designs for more than 20 years. He is of Tainui decent and His Hapu is Ngati Kiriwai. He has the deepest respect for our nations most prized possession - pounamu. He currently lives in Invercargill and works from his own studio.

The pendant has been hand carved with a matte finish giving the pendant a beautiful natural and smooth feel.

This pendant from Nathan, is a one off piece and unique and will not be available again.

The pendant measures 65mm (2.55 inch) long, 30mm (1.18 inch) wide and 8mm (0.31 inch) thick.

It is made from Cascade Snowflake Greenstone Pounamu, from the Cascade Plateau, South Westland in the the south west of the south island of New Zealand. The pendant features bursts of white along the piece inside a dark translucent green jade.

The pendant is a Hei Toki style with a feature Koru.

The Toki

Known in English as the Adze. The Toki had much meaning to the Maori, it was of course an essential tool for the survival and day to day life of a Maori tribe, it was usually fashioned from stone or greenstone. The Maori also attribute the spiritual meaning of Strengh and Power to the Toki.

The Koru

This pendant also features a Koru design, the koru has been inspired by the unfurling fern frond, however in a spiritual sense the Maori use the Koru to represent peace, tranquility, personal growth, positive change and awakening.

This pendant really shows the natural beauty of greenstone. Greenstone is regarded as precious to the Maori of New Zealand and given as a taonga (gift) it is an honour to receive.

It is suspended on a traditional plaited black waxed cord that is fully adjustable for the wearer, the piece comes in a velvet pouch with a meaning card.
