Inanga Pounamu Greenstone Hei Matau Pendant

This amazing pendant is carved from rare New Zealand Inanga pounamu or greenstone. It was carved in Invercargill at the bottom of the south island of New Zealand. It was carved by Nathan Jerry.

This very special pendant is a one off and will not be available again.

The pendant is 57mm (2.24 inches) long, 40mm (1.57 inches) wide and 4mm (0.16 inches) thick. The pendant comes suspended on a natural coloured waxed plaited adjustable cord, it also comes with a velvet pouch and a meaning card.

Nathan Jerry

Nathan is trained in traditional maori carving in wood, bone and stone. His has been carving traditional maori designs for more than 20 years. He is of Tainui decent and His Hapu is Ngati Kiriwai. He has the deepest respect for our nations most prized possession - pounamu. He currently lives in Invercargill and works from his own studio.

Inanga Pounamu

Inanaga means whitebait a small fish from New Zealand rivers, this greenstone is pale/pearly green in appearance. It is named after the native whitbait fish due to it's similar colouring. Although the pendant is inanga greenstone it looks a lot like the rarer Kahurangi greenstone, which is highly translucent, a lightish green pounamu/greenstone with light streaks (which look like clouds - hence the english name "clear like the sky") and free from dark spots. It is a rare varieties of pounamu.

Hei Matau

This magnificent pure sculptural form is abstracted from the shape of a Maori fishhook or matau. It refers to the fabulous fishhook of the demigod Maui with which he fished up the North Island of New Zealand. The Hei matau is a symbol of strength, determination, peace, prosperity and good health. It is also said that the hei matau protects the wearer when travelling especially over water.
