Kawakawa Pounamu Greenstone Hei Tiki Pendant
A very special one off piece. This hei tiki is carved from dark and south westland Kawakawa Pounamu / Greenstone. It has been carved on the west coast of the south island in Hokitika by master carver Glen Surgenor.
This very special pendant is a one off and will not be available again.
The tiki measures 65mm (2.5 inches) tall, 50mm (2 inches) wide and 10mm (0.4 inches) thick.
Glen Surgenor
This incredible hei tiki pendant was hand carved on the west coast of New Zealand in Hokitika by master carver Glen Surgenor. Glen Surgenor has been carving greenstone for over 25 years. Glen uses traditional methods when carving, using traditional sand stone rubbing methods and hand sanding to a matte/satin sheen this piece has a great antique look and nice artefact feel.
Kawakawa
The pendant is carved from a beautifully dark and rich south westland pounamu, this greenstone is called Kawakawa by the Maori, this is because of its resemblance to the dark, deep rich green leaves of the Kawakawa plant or pepper tree.
Hei Tiki
One of the most distinct forms of Maori jewellery is the hei-tiki, it is also the most characteristic and most highly valued of all the Maori personal ornaments. Maori legend tells that Tiki was the first man who was created by the god Tane. The Hei prefix means something suspended from the neck. The hei-tiki can be worn by both men and women usually hanging vertically as with this pendant. They are highly valued and passed down from generation to generation as family heirlooms. Many believe that the hei tiki is also a symbol of fertility.
The pendant comes on a waxed plaited black adjustable cord with a greenstone toggle at the end. The piece comes in a velvet pouch with a meaning card.
