South Westland Pounamu Greenstone Hei Teko Teko Pendant
This incredible one off pendant features a Hei Teko Teko carved onto a drop style pendant. The pendant is carved from a beautifully dark and rich south westland pounamu, this greenstone is called Kawakawa by the Maori, this is because of its resemblance to the dark, deep rich green leaves of the Kawakawa plant.
This pendant is a one off carving and will not be available again.
This incredible pendant was hand carved on the west coast of New Zealand in Hokitika by master carver Glen Surgenor. Glen Surgenor has been carving greenstone for over 25 years. Glen uses traditional methods when carving, using traditional sand stone rubbing methods and hand sanding to a matte/satin sheen. This piece has a great antique look and nice artefact feel.
The pendant is quite large and measures 107mm (4.21 inches) long, 40mm (1.6 inches) wide and 10mm (0.4 inches) deep. The pendant comes on a waxed plaited black adjustable cord. The piece comes in a velvet pouch with a meaning card.
Hei Teko teko is a Maori language term for a carved human form (either the whole body or head), either freestanding or attached to the gable of a whare (house). Tekoteko are often carved in a defiant stance with a protruding tongue to ward off intruders.
