Kahurangi Pounamu Greenstone Hei Toki Pendant
This amazing piece of Kahurangi Pounamu / greenstone from the Arahura River, the Arahura river is located on the west coast of the south island of New Zealand.
Kahurangi Pounamu is a translucent, lightish green pounamu with lighter streaks (which look like clouds) and free from dark spots or any flaws. It is one of the rarest varieties of pounamu.
This pendant is in the style of a stylised Toki of the Maori Adze, or Toki Pou Tangata. Traditionally the Maori Adze was used as a large chisel to tool used for smoothing rough-cut wood in hand woodworking, however in wartimes the adze or toki are known to have been used by Maori warriors. The Maori also attribute the spiritual meaning of Strengh and Power to the Toki.
This Toki is a one off unique piece and will not be available again.
The toki has been carved by Nathan Jerry. Nathan is trained in traditional Maori carving in wood, bone and stone. He has been carving traditional Maori designs for more than 20 years. He is of Tainui descent and his Hapu is Ngati Kiriwai. He has the deepest respect for our nations most prized possession - pounamu. He currently lives in Invercargill and works from his own studio.
The piece measures 40mm (1 1/2 inches) long by 26mm (1 inch) wide and 4mm (3/16 inches) deep. It comes with a black waxed adjustable cord, velvet pouch and meaning card.
