Cascade Snowflake (Hukarere) Greenstone Toki (Adze) Pendant

A wonderful piece of snowflake (Hukarere) greenstone from the Cascade Plateau, South Westland in the the south west of the south island of New Zealand. The pendant features bursts of white along the piece inside a dark translucent green jade.

This pendant is in the style of a stylised Toki of the Maori Adze, or Toki Pou Tangata. Traditionally the Maori Adze was used as a large chisel to tool used for smoothing rough-cut wood in hand woodworking, however in wartimes the adze or toki are known to have been used by Maori warriors. The Maori also attribute the spiritual meaning of Strengh and Power to the Toki.

This Toki is a one off unqiue piece and will not be available again.
The toki has been carved by Nathan Jerry. Nathan is trained in traditional Maori carving in wood, bone and stone. He has been carving traditional Maori designs for more than 20 years. He is of Tainui descent and his Hapu is Ngati Kiriwai. He has the deepest respect for our nations most prized possession - pounamu. He currently lives in Invercargill and works from his own studio.

The piece measures 60mm (2.4 inches) long by 28mm (1 1/16 inch) wide and 8mm (.3 inches) deep. It comes with a natural coloured plaited waxed adjustable cord, velvet pouch and meaning card.
