The Koru

This pendant's design depicts the traditional Koru, the koru has been inspired by the unfurling fern frond, however in a spiritual sense the Maori use the Koru to represent peace, tranquility, personal growth, positive change and awakening.

This pendant really shows the natural beauty of greenstone. Greenstone is regarded as precious to the Maori of New Zealand and given as a taonga (gift) it is an honour to receive.

Big Bay Greenstone

This koru is fashioned from Big Bay Greenstone. This is greenstone found at Big Bay, a beach on the west coast of Fiordland National Park on the west coast of New Zealand's south island. Big Bay is an area rich in Maori history, particularly the trading of greenstone, New Zealand�s nephrite jade. Big Bay greenstone has a very dark green colour when flat against the skin or a flat surface and becomes more translucent when light is placed behind it. Greenstone, pounamu and New Zealand jade are all names given to this highly valued stone. Greenstone is the most commonly used name to describe the stone however the more traditional Maori name pounamu is becoming more popular.

Terry Urban

This piece was hand carved by local Nelson artist Terry Urban. Terry began carving wood and bone before switching to greenstone. He moved to Nelson which is considered to be the home of Pounamu / Greenstone. Nelson is located at the top of the south island of New Zealand. Terry Urban's designs are filled with his passion, his love of the stone and of course his own personality.

The piece measures 45mm (1.8 inches) long by 40mm (1.6 inch) wide and 5mm (.22 inches) deep. It comes with a black waxed adjustable cord, velvet pouch and meaning card.
