Hand Carved Bone Hei Matau Pendant
(CBP1713)
The Hei Matau pendant is hand carved from cow bone in New Zealand. It measures 40mm long and 27mm wide. It comes with a black waxed cord in a wooden gift box which includes a meaning card.
The Hei Matau or fish-hook shape is from Māori legend. The legends tells of a large fish (New Zealand's North Island) which was caught by the great Mariner Maui. Maui only used a bone hook in order to catch the large fish. The story tells of how the shape of Hawke's Bay in the North Island is in the shape of the Fish Hook which caught the fish.
The Hei Matau (Fish hook) is considered a Taonga (a Treasure) by the Maori people. It is said to represent strength, prosperity, fertility and safe passage, especially over water.
