Hei Matau Bone Pendant
(KTBFH06)
The fish hook or hei matau, as it is known by the Maori, represents strength, prosperity, abundance, fertility and is also known to protect the wearer of the pendant while travelling, especially when travelling over water.
This fish hook pendant has been carved on the west coast of the New Zealand's south island. It measures 25mm wide and 43mm tall, it comes with a black waxed cord and a meaning card.
It is made from New Zealand cow bone. Traditionally all tools and pendants were made from whale bone. The Maori would use the bone to fashion useful tools to help in their everyday lives such as fish hooks. They would wear these tools around their necks, this would prevent the tool from getting lost. In time the use for the tools diminished however the tradition of wearing the tool around ones neck increased.
