Kawakawa Greenstone Very Large Mere Club Pendant by Moreton Jewellery

Kawakawa Greenstone Very Large Mere Club Pendant by Moreton Jewellery

This pendant is in the style of the Mere, also known as a Patu or Waihaka, which is a short flat club style weapon. It was usually made from Bone, wood or in this case Greenstone. It was used by skilled Maori warriors in hand-to-hand combat and in the right hands it was deadly. The greenstone mere was particularly highly prized as it requires an incredible amount of work to make one. Warriors who carried a greenstone mere were considered to posses great strength and honour.

This pendant is carved from Kawakawa greenstone / Pounamu, Kawakawa greenstone or Pounamu gets it names from the pepper tree leaves which this greenstone look similar to. Greenstone is regarded as the stone of the gods by the Maori of New Zealand. It is referred to as a Taonga, treasured thing, and it should be worn with respect and pride, it should be given with love.

This is a one off piece and will not be available again

New Zealand greenstone
When the first white settlers arrived on the West Coast of the South Islands of New Zealand they found that the maoris were using tough, hard and very beautiful green stone to make war weapons, cutting and carving tools and articles for personal adornment.

The Maori called the stone Pounamu, which liberally translated means Green Stone, The settlers ignorant of the fact that the stone was in fact nephrite Jade, put the two words together and gave it the distinctive name - Greenstone and it is still known in New Zealand by this name.
